BuCor Recruitment 2026: How to Be a Corrections Officer I (Qualifications and Requirements)

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is under the Department of Justice. It handles the custody and rehabilitation of national prisoners, or those sentenced to more than three years in prison.

New BuCor uniformed personnel start as Corrections Officer I (CO1). Here are the qualifications, requirements and how to apply.

Corrections Officer I qualifications

Based on BuCor’s recruitment page and RA 10575 (The Bureau of Corrections Act of 2013), as amended:

  1. Citizen of the Philippines
  2. Of good moral character
  3. Holder of a baccalaureate degree from a recognized school
  4. Has the appropriate civil service eligibility (for example: CSC Professional, RA 1080, PD 907, or Penology Officer eligibility)
  5. Not dishonorably discharged or dismissed for cause from previous employment
  6. Not convicted by final judgment of a crime involving moral turpitude
  7. Not less than 21 and not more than 40 years old
  8. Meets the minimum height requirement

Age note: Applicants above 36 years old must sign a waiver agreeing that they may not qualify for the full retirement benefits of a uniformed BuCor officer.

Height note: RA 11549 lowered the minimum height for BuCor applicants to 1.57 m for males and 1.52 m for females. BuCor’s own recruitment page still lists older figures, so confirm with the BuCor Human Resource Division. A height and age waiver from the NCIP may be granted to applicants from indigenous cultural communities.

Applicants also go through physical/agility tests, a qualifying exam, interviews, a neuro-psychiatric exam and medical/dental exams.

Requirements

Use a long white folder for Corrections Officer applications. Requirements per BuCor’s recruitment page:

Folder 1: Application (tabbed)

  • Letter of intent
  • Five (5) original notarized copies of the Personal Data Sheet (CS Form 212)
  • Two (2) authenticated copies of your certificate of eligibility (CSC or PRC) with official receipt
  • Authenticated Transcript of Records and school or CHED certification
  • Original PSA birth certificate (present the original receipt)
  • Original PSA marriage certificate and children’s birth certificates (if applicable)
  • One valid original NBI clearance
  • One valid PNP Directorate for Intelligence (D.I.) clearance from Camp Crame

Folder 2: For BuCor background investigation

  • Notarized Personal Data Sheet
  • Original clearances: NBI, PNP D.I., local police, barangay, and RTC, MTC and prosecution clearances
  • PSA birth certificate, PSA marriage certificate (if married), education certificates, certificate of employment (if any), and passport (if any). These may be photocopies.
  • Notarized waiver allowing a background investigation
  • Sketch of your house from landmarks
  • Two latest colored 2×2 photos (not edited)

Folders 3 (12 photocopies of your PDS for the Selection Board) and 4 (for attestation) are submitted later, after the agility exam results.

Corrections Officer I salary in 2026

BuCor uniformed personnel follow the base pay schedule for military and uniformed personnel. Under Executive Order No. 107 (s. 2025), a Corrections Officer I gets a monthly base pay of ₱31,151 in 2026, plus allowances. See the base pay schedule of military and uniformed personnel.
