RA 11766 extends validity of firearm licenses to 5-10 years

RA 11766 extends the validity of the license to possess firearms and ammunition from two years to five or 10 years amending RA 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

“All licenses to possess a firearm, regardless of type or classification, shall be renewed every five years or ten years, at the option of the licensee, which shall be reckoned from the birthdate of the said licensee, unless sooner revoked or suspended,” it read.

The registration of the firearm must be renewed every five or 10 years, at the option of the licensee, which must be reckoned from the birthdate of the said licensee unless sooner revoked or suspended.

Republic Act (RA) No. 11766, inked by Duterte on May 6, 2022, amended RA 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act which initially required applicants to show a threat assessment certificate issued by the Philippine National Police (PNP) proving that their lives are in “imminent danger due to the nature of their profession, occupation or business”

Under the new law, the following persons are now “exempted” from the said requirement:

1. Elected incumbent and former officials

2. Active and retired military and law enforcement personnel

3. Members of the Philippine Bar

4. Certified Public Accountants

5. Accredited media practitioners

6. Cashiers, bank tellers

7. Priests, ministers, rabbi, imams

8. Physicians and nurses

9. Engineers

10. Businessmen who, by the nature of their business or undertaking, are exposed to high risk of being targets of criminal elements.
