Ivermectin has been making rounds on social media if it can be used to treat Covid 19. There is also an ongoing debate among physicians since some swear for its efficacy and urge the government to make it available to patients.
Ivermectin tablets have been approved for some worm infestations and for veterinary use in animals for parasites. According to World Health Organization using the anti-parasite ivermectin in patients with Covid19 is not recommended based on the lack of clinical trial for human treatment. Merck the manufacturer of Ivermectin said its analysis did not support the drug’s safety and efficacy for Covid19.
Deputy Speaker Wes Gatchalian said in a statement “I just want to remind the public that this drug has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for human use and may be highly harmful to the health of our consumers.” He also reminded the public that using ivermectin could cause serious harm among human beings, and he further said that as long as the FDA has not yet issued a compassionate special treatment for the coronavirus disease, consumers should stick to the approved use of the drug.
According to former Senator Sonny Trillanes IV “There’s global clamor by experts for the use of Ivermectin as prophylactic/early intervention drug vs. COVID. Can DOH expedite clinical trials? Allow off label/compassionate use? It may be another false cure, but given the dire situation, at least give the patients that option.”
The former Senator had a point because people who had the virus is running out of option on what to do and how to treat such disease when they already knew that we are lacking in the Covid19 vaccine area. If the ivermectin is their last option for the cure even if the FDA did not approve it yet they don’t have so much of a choice. They can try it and hope they can survive the virus or they can just accept their fate.
