Department Of Health Declares National Dengue Epidemic

Department of Health today declares National Dengue Epidemic because of a rapid increase in dengue cases. A total of 146,062 cases were recorded from January until July this year. It is 98% higher than in the same period in 2018. With total death of 622.

DOH requested the National Risk Reduction and Management Council Chair Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana to convene a full council meeting.

Number of Cases based on DOH Dengue Surveillance Report

Region VI- Western Visayas has the most number of cases with 23,330.

Region IVA- Calabarzon comes second with 16,515.

Region IX- Zamboanga peninsula with 12,317 cases.

Region X- Northern Mindanao with 11,455.

Region XII- Soccskargen with 11,083.

“It is important that a National Epidemic be declared in these areas to identify where a localized response is needed and to enable the local government units to use their quick response fund to address the epidemic situation,” Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III stressed.

According to the DOH, seven regions that have exceeded the epidemic threshold which include Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol region, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao.

“Starting today, the DOH, together with other government agencies, the LGUs (local government units), the schools, the offices, and communities will conduct the ‘Sabayang 4 o’clock habit’ para dengue out, focusing on search and destroy in mosquito breeding sites,” Duque said in the same press briefing.
