About Eid Al Adha

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (Ishmael), as an act of obedience to God. According to Islamic tradition, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead, sparing Ismail’s life.

Key Points about Eid al-Adha:

Religious Significance:

    • Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who can afford it and are physically able.
    • It honors the faith and devotion of Ibrahim and signifies the importance of sacrifice in Islam.

    Observance:

      • The holiday is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
      • The date varies each year based on the lunar calendar.

      Practices:

        • Prayers: The day begins with a special prayer known as Salat al-Eid at the mosque.
        • Sacrifice: Muslims who can afford it perform the Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of an animal such as a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The meat is divided into three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for friends and relatives, and one-third for the needy.
        • Charity: Emphasis is placed on giving to the less fortunate, ensuring that everyone can participate in the celebrations.
        • Feasting: Families gather to share festive meals, and traditional dishes are prepared.
        • Community and Family: Visiting friends and relatives, exchanging gifts, and communal prayers are also common.

        Global Observance:

          • Eid al-Adha is celebrated by Muslims worldwide and is a public holiday in many Muslim-majority countries. The duration of the public holiday varies by country.

Eid al-Adha is a time for reflection, devotion, and community, symbolizing the principles of faith, charity, and the importance of sacrifice in Islam.
